Undercut-forming side inserts can be automated by use of pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders fixed to the mold. These control elements are arranged on the movable part of the mold such as the frame or table of the processing machine.
The side insert 5 is connected to the cylinder I by means of fork 4 as shown in Fig.7.39. The clamping plate 3 of the cylinder is fixed to the mold. The advantage of using a fork is that the accurate setting of the cylinder is unnecessary.
In Fig. 7.40 the cylinder 1 is directly connected to the side insert 4. It is essential to have the piston rod the cylinder uniaxial with the clamping screw, and movement of the piston rod parallel with the guide of the side insert, otherwise one of the members of the system may get yammed.
