ABS

ABS plastic is an easily machined, tough, low cost rigid thermoplastic plastic with high impact strength, ideal for turning, drilling, milling,sawing, die-cutting, shearing.

ABS plastic is a copolymer made by polymerizing styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence

of polybutadiene in varying proportions, combined by a variety of methods including graft

copolymerization and physical blending, and toughened with polybutadiene. The styrene gives the

plastic a shiny, impervious surface. The butadiene, a rubbery substance, provides resilience even at

low temperatures. The proportions can vary from 15%to 35% acrylonitrile, 5%to 30%butadiene

and 40% to 60% styrene. The result is a long chain of polybutadiene criss-crossed with shorter

chains of poly (styrene-co-acrylonitrile). The nitrile groups from neighboring chains, being polar,

attract each other and bind the chains together, making ABS stronger than pure polystyrene

ABS plastics provide a balanced combination of mechanical toughness, wide temperature

range, good dimensional stability, chemical resistance, electrical insulating properties, and ease of

abrication. aBS plastics are produced in a wide range of grades including medium and high-impact,

heat-resistant, plateable fire-retardant, and both low and high gloss varieties. ABS plastics are

available as compounds for injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, and calendaring, as sheet

for thermoforming or cold forming, and in expandable grades for foam molding.

Applications: For the majority of applications, ABS can be used between-40-100'C as its

mechanical properties vary with temperature. ABS applications are extremely broad, falling

between commodity plastics and the engineering resins. Examples are electronic equipment cases

(e.g, computer monitors, printers, keyboards ) and drainage pipe

ABS's light weight and ability to be injection molded and extruded make it useful in

manufacturing products such as drain-waste-vent pipe systems, musical instruments(recorders and

piano movements, golf club heads (due to its good shock absorbable), automotive trim components, automotive bumper bars, medical devices for blood access, enclosures for electrical and electronic assemblies, protective headgear, white water canoes, buffer edging for furniture and joinery panels, luggage and protective carrying cases, small kitchen appliances, and toys, including LEGO bricks.
